Austrian Abstracts
——————–
Between 2000 and 2004, the “Lanolin” association made it’s business to document and release austrian video art. The website
www.lanolin.at features detailed information on the 4 part VHS-series “Austrian Abstracts”.
The first “Austrian Abstracts”- release under curator Norbert Pfaffenbichler was introduced in the context of the austrian
filmfestival “Diagonale” in Graz, 1999. Since that time,”Austrian Abstracts” has been released annually.
“Austrian Abstracts” shows a wide spectrum of different video styles and working methods, for example working with
foundfootage-material, as well as gateways to abstract “motion-graphic”. The bandwidth outreaches further, from spectacular
3d-renderings to recordings of audiovisual live perfomances.
Often, the videos establish a dialogue between image and sound by subtle approach: Videoimages by Michaela Schwentner, Tina
Frank, Lia, epy and many others offer a true pleasure for eyes and ears.
Besides this conceptional and aesthetic varying approach, the video work has a high quality style in common. In search
of new visual forms of expression, the video artists start to break down traditional samples and structures.
The “Austrian Abstracts”-screening features a retrospect to the austrian video- and electro scene between 1999 and 2002.
